How London Drivers Voice uses artificial intelligence in producing its journalism, and the human oversight that governs it.
1. Purpose
London Drivers Voice (LDV) uses AI tools to assist with research, drafting, and production. This policy sets out how, so readers know what role AI plays and what role a human editor plays in everything we publish.
2. What AI is used for
AI tools may be used at LDV for:
- Synthesising publicly available research, reports, and source material during the drafting process.
- Producing first-draft text, which the editor then rewrites, fact-checks, and restructures.
- Copyediting and proofreading.
- Generating featured images and illustrative graphics.
- Technical support for the website itself (formatting, page layout, code).
3. Human oversight
No article is published without a human editor reviewing it first. Specifically:
- Every factual claim is checked against a primary source by the editor before publication, regardless of whether AI assisted in drafting.
- The right-of-reply process set out in our Editorial Standards & Ethics Policy applies in full to every article, with no exception for AI-assisted content.
- Editorial judgement — what to cover, how to frame it, what to include or leave out — is made by the editor, not by an AI tool.
- AI-generated text is never published unedited. It is treated as a draft, not a finished product.
4. Labelling
If AI assists in producing the substantial majority of an article’s text, that article will carry a visible note stating that AI was used to assist the editor in producing it. Articles that use AI only for minor copyediting, research synthesis, or image generation are not separately labelled, as the writing, judgement, and verification remain the editor’s own.
5. Accountability
Regardless of what tools are used in production, full editorial and legal responsibility for everything published on this site rests with London Drivers Voice’s editor and publisher. AI tools are not a source, are not quoted, and are never treated as a substitute for verification.
